Prayer of Petition
There are many different kinds of prayer. One kind is the prayer of petition. It is pretty much what it sounds like. You write down in detail what it is that you are petitioning God for. A prayer of petition involves praying to God asking Him to meet a need. Sometimes that need is for ourselves, and sometimes it’s for others, but it’s a direct request for something we truly desire God to deliver.
“Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.†–1 John 5:14-15, NKJV
The word petition from 1 John 5:15 is extremely important. It’s defined as “a formal written request addressed to a sovereign superior for a particular right or grace.â€
How do you create a prayer of petition?
Recently, a couple in our congregation had a need in their home and they decided to use this method of prayer for this need. Here is their testimony:
"I am bragging on my ABBA Father God today to give Him the glory due to his name and goodness! Last summer my husband Karl and I found out we needed a new air conditioning coil because ours was rusted and the Freon was leaking out. At the same time, we found out that our furnace was over 22 years old and needed to be replaced.
So, we put together a “Prayer of Petition†based on the scriptures we found in the Word of God that promised us what we were believing HIM for. On October 9th, 2023, we wrote out the prayer, signed and dated it.
This year in April and May had been so cool that we didn't need our air conditioning until recently when we had a few days of almost 90° weather. We turned on our air conditioner again and it was blowing warm air, so we knew we needed to get more Freon.
But God began to work. He worked so fast it was a miracle! First, He blessed us with unexpected finances. Then we called our HVAC technician. He gave us an estimate of what it would cost for the air conditioning coil, furnace and other items needed for the installation. Which was less than we had been quoted from another source. But then he told us that he had a brand-new condenser that he would sell to us. (Which was one of those unheard-of deals!) So, we said yes we would buy it. Making a long story shorter we ended up getting a brand new five-ton furnace and five-ton air conditioning unit with everything and it was all under $5,000.00. Because of the unexpected finances that God blessed us with we only paid out of pocket $1,630.00!
See what I mean? God is good, He worked fast and did a financial miracle before our very eyes!
Our house is nice and cool now. I look forward to this winter too. We will have a nice warm home without the high propane bill as in previous years. You know, it was the right time for a financial miracle because His Word does not return void, ever."

How do you create a prayer of petition?
- Go to the written Word of God. Find scriptures that apply to your situation, and make those the foundation for your petition. Be specific. Take your time. Study and meditate on those promises pertaining to your need.
- Consult with the Holy Spirit. Get in communication with the Holy Spirit, and let Him help you develop your petition in detail. Listen for correction or instruction, and follow His leading as you seek His blessings. An important part of doing this is praying in the spirit (Romans 8:26-27).
- Write your petition. Writing your petition to the Lord as a formal request, using His Word. (Habakkuk 2:2).
- Stay in faith. The enemy always tries to steal from us. But the Bible says that if we resist him, he has to flee.
